Abstract
Professor P. H. Hirst is a member of the faculty of the Department of Education of Kings College, University of London. He is particularly concerned with the curriculum for the secondary school. His article was written as a paper that he presented in 1966 at a conference of The Schools Council at the University of Nottingham on the educational implications of social and economic change. (The functions of The Schools Council are explained in the introduction to another article in this issue, "Developing New Curricula").
