Specific Constants for Visual Excitation

Abstract
For response to visual flicker the curves given by mean critical illumination / in a flash, as a function of flash frequency F, are of different shapes in various teleost spp. At constant temp. and with a fixed proportion of light-time in a flash cycle these curves are accurately fitted by probability integrals, for which the 3 parameters (F vs. log I) are Fmax., crlog I and the abscissa of inflection. These differ for the rod- and cone-segments in each case, and are char-acteristic for the generic type of fish. When temp. and the light-time ratio are varied the changes in these 3 parameters indicate that they rationally and quantitatively describe significant features of the mechanism governing the relation between F and I. The curve for an intergeneric hybrid between Xiphophorus and Platypocoelis shows that the constitutional invariants expressed by the 3 parameters for the parent stocks are recombined in such a way as to indicate a relatively simple mechanism for independent inheritance of the quantitative values of the 3 parameters.
