TMS Derivatization in Aqueous Solutions

Abstract
It is possible to prepare trimethylsilyl ether derivatives of species in aqueous solution with both qualitative and quantitative reliability. A procedure employing sufficient reagents to react with the water present and a test for completeness of derivatization are described. The method eliminates volatilization losses and manipulative inconveniences associated with freeze drying aqueous samples and permits study of solution phenomena not otherwise observable. The method was tested for polyols and carbohydrates.
