Phase separation and phase transitions inKC60: AC13NMR study

Abstract
We present evidence from C13 NMR for a low-temperature (LT) KC60 phase, similar to the one observed in RbC60, obtained by rapid quenching of a KC60 sample from high temperatures. The same sample exhibits phase separation of the high-temperature phase into K3 C60 and C60. Distinct C13 NMR spectra of the different phases and their temperature dependence are shown. High-resolution C13 magic angle spinning NMR experiments reveal a fraction of sp3 carbon atoms in the LT phase, providing evidence for the proposed ‘‘polymerization’’ or ‘‘dimerization’’ of the C60 molecules in the LT phase.
