Abstract
High resolution electron energy lossspectroscopic data for the high coverage (q≳0.5) phase of CO on a Pt(111) surface show that adsoprtion occurs without any detectable changes to the characteristic vibrational modes of the admolecule. This is seen as evidence that a uniaxial compression of the admolecules does not occur, but that instead the coverage increase is accomodated by introducing coherently spaced packing faults into tje half‐monolayer c(4×2) structure. Keywords
