Abstract
The need for a compression system to significantly reduce the size of high resolution gray-scale and full-color image (picture) files, which can range from 100 Kbytes to over 3 Mbytes, stimulated an extensive research program that resulted in the development of new image compression systems. These new compression systems, based on well established compression schemes, can reduce image file sizes by a factor of more that 20:1 with only minor detectable image degradation.© (1988) COPYRIGHT SPIE--The International Society for Optical Engineering.
