Abstract
A microwave apparatus based on a new measurement technique is described. The apparatus has been used to measure the size and dielectric constant of small liquid droplets with diameters of hundreds of micrometres. It is based on an active measurement technique, in which the sensing cavity is placed within a feedback loop containing a microwave amplifier. In this configuration the system functions as a cavity-tuned oscillator whose resonant frequency and amplitude level are determined by the dielectric properties of the sample.
