The Dynamics of the Gc Polymorphism in a Brazilian Population

Abstract
Studies of the Gc types of 295 Negroid and 296 Whites from the city of Porto Alegre, Brazil, are presented, representing the 1st information about this polymorphism in Brazilian populations. On the basis of Gc1 gene frequencies the accumulated White admixture in this Negro population is calculated to be 37% and the average gene flow per generation, 4%. These figures are somewhat lower than estimates using other gene markers. Attempts to locate selective mechanisms responsible for this polymorphism were unsuccessful. In particular, the incidence of Gc phenotypes in samples of leprosy patients and appropriate controls did not show any significant difference.
