Abstract
To the Editor.— The comments of Dr. Epstein have been considered and are well taken, although some discussion is necessary. We too were concerned with the lack of correlation between the patch testing and intradermal testing and, in fact, discussed this at some length under "Comments." We think some of the noncorrelation is due to a very severe criterion for considering a positive patch by our rating of 1 or 2+ when others would perhaps consider these negative. In addition, the high-concentration patch test as reported by Dr. Epstein himself is only 90% accurate. If the intradermal testing is considered by itself, then only 2% of the subjects are sensitive. This, however, in no way detracts from the purpose of the communication which was to report a low incidence of neomycin allergy in the normal individual.
