RELATIVE INITIAL POPULATIONS OF FOIL-EXCITED HELIUIM AND LITHIUM AT ION ENERGIES BETWEEN 70 KEV AND 400 KEV

Abstract
Extending earlier measurements we have investigated the energy dependence of the initial populations of foil-excited Helium and Lithium. For a given angular momentum quantum number 1 the populations scale with the principal quantum number n as n-X. The exponent is close to three and does not depend significantly on the projectile energy. Only small differences between He and Li are observed. The population distribution among the different 1-states with the same n is not statistical and varies strongly with the projectile energy.
