The Cracker-Barrel Classroom: Rural Programming for Continuing Education

Abstract
This paper describes common problems and issues related to programming for continuing education in a rural state and efforts to deal with them. Rurality has a definite impact on the content, structure, and methods of continuing education. Demographic factors, characteristics of rural social work practice, and characteristics of human service organizations in small communities need to be considered. Teaching materials for practitioners in urban areas are not always relevant for those in rural areas. Because educational resources are scarce in rural areas, shared sponsorship and interagency collaboration is often necessary in the development of educational programs.
