Abstract
Capillary basement-membrane thickening (CMBT) associated with [human] diabetes mellitus appears to be a complication of the insulin-deficient state. The pathogenesis of diabetic CBMT is multifactorial. CBMT is probably a nonspecific reaction to and manifestation of abnormal vascular function and/or injury. As such, it provides a useful index, perhaps the best available, for monitoring deleterious effect(s) of the diabetic state on the vascular system. The cellular mechanism(s) by which these effects are mediated remains to be identified. This publication has 6 references indexed in Scilit:
