Abstract
Few methods exist today for measuring the wear properties of magnetic-head ferrites and/or magnetic-tape particles other than by actual testing of a head or tape. The method described in this paper is basically a simple one. It uses a standard, metallurgical polishing process on a ferrite chip module, substituting a magnetic-particle slurry for the abrasive. Wear is measured using the long diagonal of knoop indentations before and after the wear tests. Test were conducted to study the effects of time, speed, pressure, and slurry concentration. Wear, which increases with slurry concentration, was linearly related to time, speed, and pressure. The slope of curves is different below and above a slurry concentration of 20 g/l. Based on these tests, convenient test, convenient test parameters were selected, and subsequent tests were conducted on different ferrites and magnetic particles to demonstrate the feasibility of the test techniques. Results obtained by slurry tests are consistent with other known wear data. Keywords
