Abstract
Chloromycetin inhibits the growth of Salmonella organisms in vitro remarkably like that of coliform germs. Other coliforms and Pseudomonas aeruginosa are less sensitive. Oral ingestion of chloromycetin does not influence the fecal flora in mice. Mice infected orally or subcut. with Salmonella could not be protected by oral or parenteral treatment with chloromycetin. Although the survival time of the treated animals was prolonged compared with that of untreated controls, the fatal outcome of the infection could not be prevented. The action of the drug is bacteriostatic but not bactericidal. Keywords
