Abstract
A disturbance in fathering has been observed in 19 cases in a pediatric diagnostic clinic. This disturbance, referred to as the paternal deprivation syndrome, is characterized by the finding that the father, to a notable degree, is psychologically uninvolved with his son and, in addition, is physically absent from the home much of the time. The presenting symptomatology is discussed, along with a description of family inter-relationships. Management of these cases is reviewed and the prophylactic role of the pediatrician is emphasized. Keywords
