Abstract
Data on the concentration of 90Sr in diet and bone for people in the United Kingdom are analysed using a model for the retention of 90Sr in the skeleton in which the fraction of dietary 90Sr entering bone, mu t, and the fractional rate of bone turnover, lambda t year-1, both vary with age, t years. The best fit to the data is given by the following relationships: mu t=a0+a1t+a2t2+a3t3 and lambda t=c+d exp (-(t-m)2/2 sigma 2) where a0=0.1341+or-0.0034, a1=-0.0186+or-0.0043, a2=0.00205+or-0.00054, a3=-0.000068+or-0.000017, c=0.106+or-0.026, d=0.615+or-0.093, m=4.87+or-0.41, sigma =3.80+or-0.42. The results may be used to predict future levels of 90Sr in bone from measurements of the radionuclide in diet and also to calculate the radiation doses received by tissues in bone from intakes of 89Sr and 90Sr.Keywords
