Abstract
A brief review of the field, petrographic, geochemical and experimental evidence bearing on the origin of granitic magmas in Skye and Rhum is presented. The conclusion is reached that they originated by fusion of Lewisian and Torridonian country rocks, the source of heat being the central basic/ultrabasic intrusions. This conclusion is at variance with Kleeman's recent suggestion in this Journal that these rocks formed from differentiated or contaminated and differentiated basic magmas. Keywords
