Carbon Dioxide Exchange in Saguaro Seedlings

Abstract
Two—year—old saguaro seedlings possess crassipes acid metabolism (CAM). Carbon dioxide uptake occurs at night with release during the light period. With a rise in temperature dark CO2 uptake is significantly reduced. The combination of water—storage tissue and CAM may contribute to the success of these large succulents in the Sonoran Desert.
