Tungsten(V) oxytrichloride and oxytribromide. Part II. Reactions with donor molecules and the related behaviour of molybdenum(V) oxytribromide

Abstract
The oxytrihalides MoOBr3, WOCl3, and WOBr3 react with a variety of oxygen and nitrogen donor molecules to form compounds of empirical formula MOX3,2L which are formulated as monomers containing terminal MoO or WO groups. The compounds have been characterised by oxidation-state titrations, infrared and electronic spectral measurements, and temperature range (320–80°k;) magnetic studies. The direct reaction of WOCl3 with pyridine or trimethylamine give the dark blue 1 : 1 adducts WOCl3,py or WOCl3,NMe3, respectively, whose magnetic properties are very similar to those of WOCl3 itself, and which are believed to be octahedral polymers with W–O–W bridges.
