A Study on Accumulation and Release of Loosely Bound Fluoride on Enamel

Abstract
After the insertion of mouth appliances carrying intact and presoftened enamel slabs, volunteer students rinsed their mouths with 0.2% sodium fluoride or received a topical treatment with either a neutral 2% sodium fluoride or an acidulated phosphate fluoride solution. The amount of loosely bound fluoride was determined after various time periods in the oral cavity. The fluoride uptake increased in the series 0.2% NaF < 2% NaF < APF. In the presoftened enamel the fluoride uptake was highly increased and the fluoride was retained for extended periods of time.
