Abstract
Leaf shoot density counts, performed in the P. oceanica (Linne) Delile beds of 4 French Mediterranean regions (Marseilles, Toulon, Cannes and Calvi), allowed a proposal of a classification model of these beds. Five stages were defined, from the stage called herbiers tres denses (very dense beds - more than 700 shoots/m2), to the semi-herbiers (semi or half-beds - between 50 and 150 shoots/m2). Below 50 shoots/m2, tiges isolees (isolated shoots) are referred to rather than herbiers (beds).
