Precipitation associated with the climb ofa⟨100⟩ dislocations in a low-carbon iron-vanadium alloy

Abstract
The precipitation of vanadium carbide on ageing has been studied in a ferritic iron-vanadium alloy containing a small amount of carbon. It was found that the precipitation starts by means of a continuous mechanism, which operates as long as quenched-in vacancies are available to compensate the expansion connected with the growth of precipitates. After the disappearance of quenched-in vacancies, precipitation proceeds discontinuously on {100} plane in collaboration with the climb of a⟨100⟩ dislocations emitting vacancies. The Burgers vector as well as the plane of climb of the dislocations are determined by the habit plane of the precipitate.
