Abstract
We treated a patient in whom removal of a primary malignant melanoma was associated with the dramatic appearance of multiple, prominent halo nevi. Four additional patients were subsequently observed who exhibited this phenomenon following removal of their primary malignant melanomas. Histologic examination of the halo nevi showed atypical, disintegrating melanocytes with little inflammatory infiltrate. Immunologic studies revealed that the patients' lymphocytes had strong cellular immunity toward melanoma antigens. Halo nevi may occur in association with malignant melanoma more commonly than previously suspected and may represent an immune response to melanoma or related antigens. Keywords
