Abstract
The method of using some of the "empty" lines during the vertical blanking interval for special signals, such as reference and test signals, has developed considerably during the last few years. Efforts toward standardization and a common code at practice have been made, especially within the European broadcasting area. The first part of this paper reviews these developments, stressing the most important aspects. Keywords
