Abstract
In this chapter, I want to examine the relationship between urban regime theory and regulation theory in terms of their theoretical commensurability. However attractive the integration of the two perspectives may appear, it can only provide a sound framework for understanding urban politics if there is at least no contradiction between the conceptual bases of the different elements. As regulation theory has many versions, I begin by outlining briefly my understanding of regulation theory and of its relationship to urban politics.
