Correlates of Career Choices of Women Volunteers

Abstract
A study of 272 female volunteers aged 25 to 46 yr. explored the idea that the career role assigned to volunteer work is a function of life stage rather than of background differences. The data suggest that changes in the role of volunteer work are more likely to occur around the transition ages of 30, 35, and 40 yr. than at other ages. The majority of respondents indicated they consider their children's needs and opportunities before their own or their husbands', and the age of the youngest child was significantly related to change in reported volunteer hours. The respondents' emphasis on family and children leads to a recommendation for more research on children's ages as a factor in women's career choices.
