Effect of Growth Hormone on the Pancreas and Adrenals of Rabbits

Abstract
Growth hormone was administered in const. or increasing amts. to 13 English rabbits for periods ranging from 15 to 72 days with the following results: (1) alterations in appetite; (2) glucosuria in 9 animals; (3) increase in N retention and body wt. in the absence of glucosuria and converse effects during glucosuric periods and after hormone withdrawal; (4) increased initial urine output; (5) increased resistance to hypo-glycemic action of injected insulin, particularly during glycosuria; (6) increase in the mean size of pancreatic islets and no. of large islets proportional to the amt. of hormone administered, proliferation of small ducts, and formation of new islets in one animal, no change in the ratio of a to B cells; (7) an increase in wt. in the adrenal glands with striking degenerative changes in the adrenal cortex of one rabbit.
