Abstract
The energy distribution of the recoiling atoms from the reaction , induced by 450-MeV protons, was measured at eight laboratory angles between 30° and 150° to the beam direction. The contribution of various mechanisms to the total cross section is estimated, and a direct knockout mechanism is shown to predominate—if, indeed, a distinction among the different mechanisms can be made in such light nuclei. The results are compared with a distorted-wave calculation of Benioff and Person.
