Abstract
Tested male rats on 3 measures of motivation when water deprived and when water satiated but with carbachol injected into the lateral preoptic area. Deprivation time was adjusted so that water intake was comparable under the 2 conditions. Performance on variable interval (VI) licking, VI bar pressing, and quinine-tolerance tests was poorer after carbachol injection than after deprivation. Results suggest that water deprivation leads to greater motivation than does carbachol stimulation because deprivation activates multiple but interrelated systems, whereas stimulation with carbachol operates only at a single central locus in the thirst system.
