Abstract
Valence-band photoemission from the 4f shell confirms the divalent nature of Eu in , while photoemission from the 3d deep core level results in both divalent and trivalent spectral features. The components, with about 15% intensity in the Eu 3d spectrum, are thus caused by final-state shake-up effects. Their existence is in agreement with the theoretical predictions of Delley and Beck, and they offer strong support for the recent interpretation of the -edge spectrum of this compound.
