Recurrent Otitis Media in Association With Immunodeficiency

Abstract
• A patient with recurrent middle ear infections may have an underlying disease that causes him to have an increased susceptibility to infection. An 8-year-old boy had recurrent otitis media in association with common variable immunodeficiency (VID). HLA typing and in vitro tests for lymphocyte function were carried out on members of his family, and results suggested that the mother's HLA haplotypes might provide a link to low responsiveness of lymphocytes to one of the streptococcal cell wall antigens. The site of lesion of B-cell differentiation and immunological and clinical aspects of VID are discussed. (Arch Otolaryngol1982;108:204-207)
