Echinosteliopsis, a New Genus of the Mycetozoa

Abstract
ECHINOSTELIOPSIS oligospora, a new genus and sp. of unknown affinities with other mycetozoans, has been isolated from dead plant parts in the southeastern U.S., Mexico, Ecuador, Malaysia, and New Zealand. In some ways it resembles a minute Echinostelium (Myxomycetes), but flagellate cells and a sexual stage have not been found. The amoebae, which are broad and produce filose pseudopodia, contain 1 to several nuclei with numerous peripheral nucleoli. The fruiting body consists of a stalked sporangium with 1 -8 spores. Sporangia with 4 or more spores commonly have a single smaller stalk spore attached to the top of the stalk. The stalks and walls of spores and cysts give a positive test for cellulose in chloriodide of zinc.
