Abstract
The structure of the trapped modes conjectured by Stern (1963) and Bretherton (1964) is investigated in detail. Numerical values of the longer periods are found and an asymptotic formula derived for the shorter periods. Each mode is found to have pathological features near the bounding surface and to contain substantial regions where the fluid is at rest. It is suggested that the trapped modes might constitute virtually all the free periods of oscillation of the fluid and their physical relevance is examined.
