Treatment of Breast Cancer with High-Energy Electrons Produced by 24-Mev Betatron

Abstract
From Jan. 1, 1955, to June 30, 1960, 222 patients with breast cancer were treated by high-energy electrons. With the exclusion of 1 case of angiosarcoma and 3 cases of carcinoma of the male breast, there remained 218 carcinomas of the female breast as a basis of evaluation. Thirty-nine of the 50 (78 per cent) inoperable carcinomas treated showed favorable response for a mean duration of twelve months. One hundred of the 135 patients (74 per cent) treated for recurrent or metastatic disease responded favorably for a mean of eight months. Many patients in this group had received prior irradiation to the same areas. They tolerated the electron treatment well. The objective response of the tumors was comparable to those obtained from x-ray irradiation. Thirty-three patients received postoperative treatment..
