Abstract
30 min before prostatectomy either 3H-testosterone or 3H-5α-DHT were injected intravenously into men with benign prostate hypertrophy. Radioactivity was counted in specimens of blood, skeletal muscle, prostate, and different parts of prostate adenomasand the androgens were separated by TLC in several systems. In the patients with benign prostate hypertrophy the endogenous plasma concentrations of testosterone and 5α-DHT were found to be in the normal range. Testosterone and 5α-DHT accumulate to greater extent in prostatic tissue than in muscular tissue. 5α-DHT is the main metabolite in prostatic tissue and the 5α reduction depends on the predominant type of tissue present. In muscle no 5α reduction of testosterone occurs, whereas exogenous 5α-DHT is efficiently metabolized to androstanediols and androsterone. Keywords
