Abstract
During October 1923 I first attempted the administration of high carbohydrate diets to diabetic patients treated with insulin. Most of the diets employed at that time were not as high in their carbohydrate content, however, as the diets that I have used during the past nine years. A preliminary report of my earlier observations with the high carbohydrate or normal type of diet was made before the Section on Pediatrics of the Medical Society of the State of Pennsylvania in October 1925.1In January 1926 Sansum2reported the use of somewhat similar diets in a group of insulin treated diabetic patients. Adlersberg and Porges3in 1927 also advocated high carbohydrate—"fat poor diets" for the treatment of diabetic patients receiving insulin.
