Taxonomy and Identification of Spiroplasmas

Abstract
Within the past decade a new genus and family of helical, wall-less prokaryotes have been recognized. To date, eight groups have been described, four of which represent species or putative species. Methods for rapid identification or confirmation of these serovars have been devised. Evidence from ribosomal ribonucleic acid cataloging suggests that the spiroplasmas and other mycoplasmas are descendants of gram-positive bacteria.
