Abstract
SURGICAL intervention for the treatment of otosclerosis has created a new interest for the anatomists. The notable studies on the subject are those of Anson,1 Farrior,2 Anson and associates,3 and Kelly4 who have emphasized the morphological variation of the adult human stapes. A detailed report on the anatomical features and variations of this ossicle has since been reported from this laboratory.5,6 It was felt worthwhile to continue with a detailed study of the fetal stapes with regard to the various stages of its development. Curiously enough, the very initial study revealed the presence of three separate centers of ossification; a finding contrary to the accepted view of ossification from a single center. This unusual finding aroused our interest and prompted us to examine this ossicle in a large series. This paper deals in particular with the mode of ossification of stapes.
