Abstract
The antibacterial activity of the combination of rifampicin and trimethoprim against some strains of Gram-negative bacteria both in vitro and in experimental infections in mice was studied in comparison with the activity of the individual components. The combination in vitro consistently decreases the incidence of bacterial cells resistant to either of the components. The combination acts in a co-operative fashion in reducing bacterial growth in liquid media and in increasing the percentage of surviving mice in experimental infections. On the basis of these results clinical trials in man are recommended. Keywords
