Abstract
Accurate measurements of the spontaneous birefringence of lead orthophosphate, Pb3(PO4)2, have been made as a function of temperature using the rotating-analyser method. A procedure for placing such measurements on an absolute scale is described. The results clearly demonstrate that, up to about 160 degrees C, the birefringence shows mean-field behavior corresponding to an order-parameter exponent beta =1/4, typical of a tricritical region. At 160 degrees C there is a crossover to a normal first-order region, with a transition temperature of 177.65 degrees C.Keywords
