Abstract
Newer Antibiotics As the first drug to be employed successfully for the systemic treatment of superficial fungus diseases of the skin,Griseofulvin(Fulvicin, Grifulvin) is an antibiotic agent of exceptional interest. It has proved especially useful in the management of ringworm of the scalp in children, fungus infections of the glabrous skin in both children and adults, fungus infections of the nails, and chronic fungus infections of the feet. Although results obtained with griseofulvin are excellent, conventional dermatological measures should not be abandoned, since the drug is often more effective when topical preparations and other external measures are employed concomitantly. Care to prevent reinfection remains important. Moreover, the antibiotic spectrum of griseofulvin is narrow and is apparently limited to species ofMicrosporum, Trichophyton, andEpidermophyton. Therefore, it should not be employed until the causative organism has been identified and shown to be susceptible to its effect. The use of griseofulvinKeywords
