Abstract
As part of a cod-enhancement study the variations in the year-class strength of cod in a nearly land-locked fjord at Austevoll in western Norway were studied, and the contribution of reared cod in the corresponding year classes was estimated. Between 1983 and 1986 the annual releases varied between 3000 and 8000 reared 0-group cod. The estimated wild (indigenous) 0-group abundances in 1983–1986 ranged from about 3700 to 16 100 and the reared (tagged) cod contributed between 21% and 61% of the different year classes in the samples after release. A declining trend in the ratio of reared cod with time at liberty in the 1983–1985 year classes was detected. A tag loss of 10% was suggested, and corrected values for 0-group abundance in 1983–1986 were 3000–13 700 individuals. The estimated density of wild 0-group cod in Heimarkspollen was similar to that observed in other areas investigated.
