Abstract
Intrapleural and esophageal pressures were measured simultaneously in 14 patients, 8 anaesthetized and 6 conscious. Relationship between the esophageal and intrapleural pressures was interpreted and varied from one individual to another. Elastic pressure of the lung measured by means of esophageal pressure was always greater than the intrapleural pressure. Non-elastic pressure required to overcome viscous resistance as measured with esophageal pressures approximated that measured with intrapleural pressure. Keywords
