THE NUCLEUS OF DARKSCHEWITSCH AND NUCLEUS INTERSTITIALIS IN THE BRAIN OF MAN

Abstract
Structures corresponding to the classic description of the nucleus of Darkschewitsch and nuc. interstitialis of Cajal have been restudied, and figures which represent their relationships are presented. The nuc. of Darkschewitsch lies at the edge of the central gray, dorsomedial to the red nucleus, and at the level of the rostral end of the aqueduct. Ventro-lateral to this group the nuc. interstitialis lies among the scattered fascicles of the reticular formation and medial long. bundle. The latter nucleus has a greater caudal extent than the nuc. of Darkschewitsch, and is more definitely related to the post. commissure and fasc. long. medialis. It is pointed out that these nuclei were apparently described together, as a single entity, by Darkschewitsch, Perlia, Kolliker and many others. They were recognized as separate structures in the human brain stem by Zeri and Panegrossi, who designated them as nuc. accessorius med. of Darkschewitsch and nuc. of Darkschewitsch, respectively. For convenience the more recent terms applied by Ramon y Cajal have been retained. The results of the present study confirm the observations of Stengel.
