Stress‐Induced Alignment of Jahn‐Teller Centres Cr2+ in ZnSe Crystals. Optical Study

Abstract
Uniaxial compression of ZnSe–Cr crystals along the fourth‐order axis results in shift and splitting of the zero‐phonon lines of the absorption band, connected with the 52(5T2) → (5Â1 + 51) (5E) transition of the impurity Cr2+ ions, and in dichroism, which is caused by the reorientation of the Jahn‐Teller centres Cr2+ along the stress direction. Spectra of stressed crystals are calculated on the base of the exchange‐charge model. In imperfect (twinned) ZnSe crystals two types of Cr2+ centres are observed. These centres are identified as Cr2+ ions in the interlayers of a twin structure.
