Abstract
Interest in recycling and reusing animal manure is increasing. Integral to a manure management system where recycling is used is a unit to separate the liquid from the solids. Commercial equipment is available for separating manure solids from liquids. This paper discusses the equipment that is available and also lists suppliers. Liquid-solid separation units include: gravity settling, rundown screens, vibrating screens, centrifuges, screw presses and roller presses. These separation units may be used singly or in combination. It is imperative to design a total system for manure handling so that system management and product recovery is acceptable and economical. Examples of total systems are discussed. The performance of separation equipment as related to solid recovery and moisture content of the soild fraction is presented. The capability of a unit must be matched to fit the purpose of the overall system. Copyright © 1980. American Society of Animal Science. Copyright 1980 by American Society of Animal Science.
