Abstract
The assumptions underlying standardization procedures involving moderator variables which use bivariate adjustment are critically examined. It is shown that under reasonable assumptions regarding the selection of candidates sitting for an achievement test, the currently used bivariate adjustment procedures grossly underestimate the average ability of the candidates and put a premium on mediocrity. Keywords
