Abstract
An equation is derived expressing average turgor pressure of a leaf (ψp) as a function of relative water content (RWC). Based on this derivation, the relationships of the bulk elastic modulus (εv) and both RWC and ψp, are formulated and discussed. The bulk elastic modulus (εv) becomes zero for ψp = 0, that is at the turgor loss point for the leaf. At full water saturation the value of ev is proportional to the water saturation turgor potential ψp(max). The factor relating ψP and εv (structure coefficient α, Burstrom, Uhrström and Olausson, 1970) changes only very little for values of ψp, which are not too close to zero. An example is given for the calculation from experimental data of the turgor pressure function, the structure coefficient function, and the εv function. This publication has 17 references indexed in Scilit:
