THE OCCURRENCE OF THE HUMORAL CHROMATOPHORE ACTIVATOR AMONG MARINE CRUSTACEANS

Abstract
The chromatophore activating principle of the crustacean eye-stalk was found in 6 additional species of decapods,[long dash]Crago (= Crangon) boreas, Pandalus mon-tagui, Homarus americanus, Pagurus longicarpus, Libinia emarginata Cancer irroratus; and one additional schizo-pod,[long dash]Mysis stenolepis. Extracts of the hormone from each of the above species, when injected into black-adapted Crago, induced maximal chromatophore contraction. Control animals similarly treated with sea water or extracts of abdominal muscle showed no comparable effects. The chromatophore activator of the eye-stalk is now known to occur in 9 families of crustaceans, and is probably present throughout the group.
