The Entocommensal Ciliate Fauna of the Pink Sea Urchin, Allocentrotus fragilis

Abstract
Specimens of Allocentrotus fragilis from the Strait of Juan de Fuca, Washington and the Santa Barbara Channel, California were examined for entocommensal ciliates inhabiting their digestive tracts. All of the ciliates were identified by means of the Chatton-Lwoff silver impregnation technique. Fourteen species of ciliates were recovered from northern hosts and 9 species were recovered from southern specimens. The probable causes of the difference in the type of infection are discussed.
